Business technology in small businesses can mean a lot of different things and can be interpreted in many different ways. But it will always come down to the same thing – the technology implemented and used by a business must provide the maximum amount of efficiency for the minimum amount of cost and maintenance.

Technology in business must be well planned and implemented in a sensible manner and a plan for technology management must be developed and adhered to. This may mean moving more of your business systems onto the internet to increase the mobility of your business, or indentifying and investing in new systems which will do the same job but in a more efficient manner.

How can the internet marketing help my business?
If you are looking to save money for your business, the internet is an excellent place to start. If your business includes a small call centre to provide customer service, you could save a lot of money in the long run by investing in changing the phone system to an IP telephony system. This would mean that rather than incurring massive phone bills using normal phones, all calls would be routed over the internet and customers would be able to call in using a normal local telephone number.

It is much cheaper to call someone through the internet than through a standard phone line and the savings you would make here would more than cover the cost of implementing such a system.

You would need to ensure that your business’ internet connection is powerful enough to manage this of course. If there is not enough bandwidth to accommodate all of the calls being made, the sound quality can suffer. As long as both parties can hear what the other is saying, this does not have to be too much of an issue – making allowances for this would need to be part of your business’ strategy for technology management.

What about My People in the Field?
If you have a large team of sales reps in the field, the savings which you could enjoy through the implementation of internet based telephony can be carried on to this side of your business as well. Nowadays, there are many mobile phones available which are capable of making calls over the internet using the 3G network. This would mean a possible upgrade of your corporate mobile phone contract and possibly some retraining for your staff – but ultimately it would save you money on phone bills.

How do I Know that My Company is Now More Efficient?
Technology in business also encompasses the assessment and monitoring of work performed by the employees. With modern networking and targeted technology management, it would be possible to not only make your company run more efficiently for less money; but also allowing you to keep an eye on exactly what is going on in real-time.

There are many products available which will allow you to monitor your employees’ statistics – be it the amount of time they are spending on each call or the amount of time they take to finishing each file before they are able to move onto the next one. Through this, you would be able to address any possible issues which may arise and discuss them with the employee.

Business technology should broaden the horizons. You should be able to do more for spending less. Something as simple as making phone calls cheaper or something as involved as identifying areas of concern in an employees performance and having more information which can be used to develop strategies for the employee to avoid this.

So you’re taking the plunge and starting your own business? You’ve got a great concept, a brilliant marketing plan and the best spot in town to start selling it all from. So you’re set, right?

Wrong.

To establish a good small medium enterprise, you should know from the beginning, the most important plan you will make is your financial plan. A great idea is not worth much if you run out of money after three weeks. A financial plan is more than just working out your rent and stock costs, small business cost is difficult to predict, a comprehensive plan may save you money in the long run.

Buy Established or Starting Your Own Business from Scratch?
One of the first decisions you will make starting your own business, is whether to purchase a business already running or to start afresh. Of course, the benefits of an established business are many when it comes to small medium enterprise. You will have a name that is known, a customer base and records of past profits available.

However, this is often the much more costly option. Starting your own business, you will need to make a name for yourself and seek out opportunities much more fiercely. It is likely that you will have to find a shop front and put up the costs for a fit out. This can be expensive, particularly if you are looking into retail. Small business cost for an office space also escalates quickly; desks, phones and computers don’t come cheap. Perhaps the greatest small business cost will be your stock; buying established means this will come along with what you buy, but this will be factored into the price.

Getting Started – Marketing and Advertising
A friend once told me she had leased a shop to start her own small medium enterprise. When asked what she had planned, she replied that she didn’t want to say as she was keeping it quiet.

She went broke in six months.

If you are starting a small business you are going to want everybody to know about. Your marketing strategy is going to make you; be sure it’s a great one. Word of mouth is only going to get you so far. Think about newspaper advertising, the internet and mail outs. It’s also a good idea to get outside the square and consider a grand opening party. Try and make contact with as many people as you can, make sure you give them a card or flyer with your details on it and do your best to get theirs. Email addresses are a great idea; there is minimal cost in sending out a newsletter this way. Print mail outs and cold calling can reap benefits, but are much more costly ways of generating business.

The Everyday Costs.
You’ve probably already thought about the small business costs; your recurring monthly expenses. Of course there is rent, wages and utility bills. Don’t forget stock or any ongoing advertising you have committed yourself to. There is also unexpected small business cost that you need to consider.

Whatever you find your break even point to be, add another twenty percent as a safety net. Think about what could happen – you could suffer a break in, have stock damaged in transit, an equipment failure or a power surge. These are only a few examples of things that can go wrong, they do happen and they probably will, so make sure you are leaving a little bit aside for that rainy day.

Are you just starting out? Sometimes it can be hard for small businesses to excel in their first year, due to the costs of establishing the business and advertising the business. There are a number of strategic marketing tips that will help to boost your business. Below is a list of the top 6 strategic marketing tips for small businesses.

6. Become a Sponsor of Your Local Sporting Club!

There are heaps of opportunities for small businesses to become sponsors of events in the local community; such as sporting events and school events. Becoming a sponsor is a great business strategy, because sponsorship deals usually do not cost a great deal of money or resources. Just think of the exposure your business will get?!

5. Learn to Take Advantage of (and Reward) Your Customers.

In a good way of course! It is not well known that it is much easier to get business from someone that has dealt with you before, than from someone who has never dealt with you. That’s why it’s so important to retain these clients. As well as the financial strategy to retain clients it is beneficial to reward regular customers with special or exclusive deals for them. Or start a loyalty program – buy 4 get one free etc.

Remember, word of mouth advertising is more effective than any other form of internet marketing – and much cheaper!

4. Offer Your Potential Customers a Cheaper or Premium Version of Your Product.

Remember that some potential clients won’t want to pay the advertised price for your product. You should have a financial strategy to cater for all budgets.

You will always find those people out looking for a bargain, good on them. A good business strategy is to accommodate for this. Avoid losing the sale altogether and have a no frills version of your product that you can sell for a lower price.

In saying this, it is important to remember that not all potential customers are looking for a cheap price. You will find that some are prepared to pay a little bit extra if they will get a top quality product. Keep in mind that if you can cater for everybody, you will definitely win in the long run.

3. Don’t Kid Yourself. Don’t Advertise Like a Big Business.

You probably cannot afford to advertise like a big business. It’s much better to do your research and advertise smartly, than largely. It is much more effective to have 5 smaller advertisements, than one large one. You’d be surprised how effective smaller forms of advertising can be.

Have you thought about a letterbox drop? If you include a special offer in your advertising, you may sway more potential customers to try your business.

2. Get Online – Don’t Miss Out on a Sale!

The internet is open 24/7. You can’t pop down to the shopping centre at 4:00am and buy a pair of shoes; but you can online! So many small businesses fail to advertising online. If you are not online, you are behind the eight-ball. You should know that the internet is typically the first place people go for information.

1. Facebook is Your Friend!

So you have now created an awesome webpage? Don’t stop at that. Did you know that there are over 175 million users on Facebook? That’s a LOT of people. Think of all the extra customers you could obtain via Facebook! Don’t worry about your financial strategy – you can create a FREE Facebook page!

If your Facebook page is done well, it can be used to bring in so many new customers as well as helping to maintain your relationships with your current customers.
